The guys from the German “Auto Bild” magazine took the new long-distance racing version of the coupe from Wolfsburg, also known as Scirocco GT24, out at the race track of Oschersleben. And of course compared it to its older brother, the Scirocco LS touring car legend.

Check out the gallery and the conclusion after the jump!

As you would think, this isn’t a pretty serious competition. No one expected the 27 years older touring car to handle and behave better than the brand new 24 hours of Nürburgring winner, the Scirocco GT24.

Christian Schön had the possibility to try out those sweet VW racing toys. He mostly notices how the newer GT24 is so easy to drive, calling it even more than idiot-safe. VW driver Depping says that the car was made easy to drive on purpose “It’s important on long distance races because you will stay concentrated for a longer time”.

The older racing car from the late seventies is something completely different. Schön describes that he was surprised by the way the car handled when he tried to turn faster. He also adds that unlike in the GT24, you should’ve finished your braking before turning into the corner with the 27 year old racer. Well it lacks ABS man, duh.

According to the driver, Volkswagen gained 0,3 seconds per year. At least 0,3 seconds is what you get when you divide the advantage that the new Scirocco racer has around Oschersleben compared to the older one. It’s almost 10 seconds quicker! He also adds that it’s a hell of a funny task to drive both cars, but that the older version is much more difficult to keep on the track due to its lack in crucial electronical systems like ABS.

To be honest, I’m too young to remember older pimped out Sciroccos on our streets over here. I’m more the type of guy that looked after tuned VW Corado’s when I was a younger boy. I probably will be looking upon the coming Scirocco R32 soon. If I had the choice, I’d take the older racer every day over the new one. Electronic systems may be something great to bring you safely home, but on a racetrack I’d rather have fun with understeering ;-) But I have to admit that VW did a GREAT JOB with the design of this car. It just looks great and I’m even considering of getting one pretty soon.
